This year’s US Open Cup final was extremely intense as Sporting Kansas City beat Philadelphia Union on penalties to secure the trophy.
It was a truly memorable evening for U.S Soccer as well as for Sporting KC and Philadelphia, but the Union will certainly feel very hard done by as they have lost in the cruelest way. This could have been Philadelphia’s moment to enjoy this season after under-impressing this MLS campaign, but it was Sporting KC who lift the cup for 2015.
Here is an overview of last night’s game in pictures.
This match was a hot affair straight from the kick-off, both teams showed determination and passion as they dream of lifting the cup.
Union scored the first goal of the evening as Vincent Nogueira slotted home in the 23rd minute after a lovely move from the whole team. Here is the squad celebrating.
From then on, Philadelphia were in control of most of the game.
It was Philadelphia who were leading by half-time but in the 65th minute Sporting KC got the equalizer through Nemeth who curled a beautiful shot into the far corner. 1-1.
At full-time the game finished 1-1 and both sides were gearing up for an extra 30 minutes of football with penalties looming…
Fans watched on as the 30 minutes were up and it was going to be a penalty shoot-out to decide the winner of the US Open Cup 2015.
Philadelphia introduced young keeper McCarthy for the shot-out but he only managed to save just one penalty…
…and it was Sporting KC who won the shoot-out and are the winners of the 2015 US Open Cup. They won 6-7 on penalties.
Here is Sporting KC manager Peter Vermes with the trophy.
The Sporting KC faithful were in their numbers as they watched their side win the cup.
Congratulations to Sporting Kansas City: US Open Cup Winners 2015.
